Terms of Service

1. What this service does

We help you prepare a federal and, where you add one, state income tax return, and we transmit it electronically as an Authorized IRS e-file Provider. Two levels are available:

• Self-prepared — you answer the interview questions and we compute, assemble and file the return from your answers.
• Full service — you upload your documents and we enter the return for you. This costs more; the surcharge depends on your filing situation and the complexity of the return, and is shown before you pay.

2. Your responsibilities

• Everything you give us must be accurate and complete. A return is signed under penalty of perjury, and the figures on it are ultimately yours.
• You must review the return before authorising us to file it.
• Keep your password and your 6-digit PIN to yourself. Anything done through your account is treated as done by you.
• You must be legally entitled to file the return you are filing, for yourself or as an authorised representative.
• You may not use the service to file a fraudulent return, or to attempt to access anyone else's information.

3. Fees and payment

• The fee is per return and is shown before you pay. State returns and full service are charged in addition to the federal price.
• Payment is taken before the return is transmitted. Card payments are processed by Stripe; we never see your card number.
• The fee pays for preparation and transmission. It is not contingent on the size of your refund, and it is not a loan against it.
• Refunds of the fee: the fee is fully refundable at any time before your return is transmitted, and is not refundable once it has been transmitted, because at that point the preparation and the filing are complete.

4. E-filing, rejections and deadlines

• Submitting a return to us is not the same as the IRS accepting it. The IRS or a state may reject a transmission — commonly for a mismatched name, SSN or prior-year figure.
• If a return is rejected we will tell you and you can correct and resubmit it. A rejection is not a failure of the service and does not by itself entitle you to a refund of the fee.
• Filing deadlines are yours to meet. Leaving a return until close to a deadline risks a rejection you no longer have time to correct.

5. What we do not do

We prepare and file returns. We are not your attorney, and unless we have separately agreed in writing we do not provide legal advice, investment advice, audit representation or bookkeeping. Nothing in the product is a guarantee of a particular refund, a particular tax liability, or a particular outcome with the IRS.

6. Limitation of liability

We take accuracy seriously and the tax engine is extensively tested, but the service is provided “as is” without warranties beyond those the law does not let us disclaim.

To the fullest extent the law allows, our total liability arising out of the service is limited to the fees you paid us for the return in question. We are not liable for indirect or consequential losses. Nothing here limits liability for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.

Interest and penalties. If we make an error preparing your return and that error causes the IRS or a state to charge you a penalty or interest, we will reimburse that penalty and interest, up to the amount of the fee you paid us for that return. You remain responsible for tax actually owed.

7. Your account

You may close your account at any time. We may suspend or close an account that is being used to file fraudulent returns, to attempt access to other people’s data, or in breach of these terms. Our retention obligations as an e-file provider survive closure — see the Privacy Policy.

8. Text messages

Creating an account sends a one-time verification code to the mobile number you enter. Message frequency is one message per verification request, message and data rates may apply, and you can reply STOP to opt out. See the Privacy Policy for details.

9. Changes, governing law and contact

We may update these terms; the effective date above will change and continued use after that constitutes acceptance. These terms are governed by the laws of Texas, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules.
